For The Homies began in 2024 by a group of Downtown Eastside front line workers who noticed a massive gap in services for people who have pets. There are extremely limited options when it comes to veterinary assistance and there are even fewer options for safe pet care when someone's circumstances become unstable or they are in need of a break. For The Homies is a low barrier, trauma-informed program that aims to reunite folks with their pets as soon as possible, and to support folks with emergency vet fees to make sure that our four legged friends in the DTES are not sick or in pain, and so that their humans will not have to surrender them due to lack of funds to pay for vet expenses
