Meet the Team
Meet our board of directors!
President
Lee Gangbar
Lee has worked as a front line outreach nurse in the Downtown Eastside since 2016. One of the best parts of her day is stopping to say hello to all the fur babies. Lee's home is a revolving door of animal guests, and she also has 6 permanent members of her household (2 snakes, 3 lizards and a 3-legged greyhound)! Starting For the Homies has been a long time dream of Lee's and she is so excited for this to be reality!
Treasurer
Seth Kaplan
A self-described altruist; Seth grew up in South Philadelphia. After graduating from Public School & earning a BA in History, he moved to the western US and had an 8 year career as a Wildland Firefighter. He fell in love with Sylvia & moved to Vancouver in 2021 after their wedding. Since then he has worked doing maintence for the Portland Hotel Society. A firm believer that housing and food are rights, not privileges. Seth works tirelessly to ensure that all the homies, human or not, have a safe place to lay their heads. He’s just a homie, working for the homies, to take care of the homies.
Secretary
Nathan Knowles
Nathan/Nate was born and raised in and around the Lower Mainland. They’re a restless creature with a penchant for paws, circus, community care and general mischief. In their early youth they came across the local SPCA while out and about, visits with the animals became a regular occurrence. After leaving home at 17 for Montréal to pursue a career in circus, it became clear that having a furry companion couldn't be ironically nothing more than a daydream. The recent changes in our political and social landscape of recent years has brought Nate to stray away from being a globally transient acrobat and into the sector of community care from a harm reduction viewpoint within Vancouver’s DTES. Naturally, joining For The Homies felt like a comfy fit and the idea of broadening the safety net of emergency foster and vet care for the Downtown Eastside community was taken strongly to heart.
Board member
Paige Collins
Paige is Registered Nurse who has worked on the Downtown Eastside for the last four years. People are
her profession, and Paige feels exceptionally lucky to be providing care to the incredible humans of the
DTES. Animals, however, have always been her truest passion. For The Homies is an exciting opportunity
for Paige to merge her love for the DTES community with her love for animals, help animals in need, and
support people who love and rely on their pet companions.
When she is not working, you will find Paige enjoying life with her two babies: Laika the Pitbull and Pixie
the cat.
Board member
Lauren Josephs
Lauren is very excited about this opportunity to support pets and their people. She has always loved animals and has seen first hand the impact that our animal companions can have on people's lives. She has a sassy 12-year old cat who never seems to make it to the litter box, but she loves her just the same, and can’t wait to be a big dog mom one day down the road.
Board member
Stephane "Kermit" Bergeron
Kermit and his dogs, Roxy an Roller, are excited to join the For the Homies team! They are long time residents of the DTES community, and are dedicated to improving the lives of Downtown Eastside dogs through positive reenforcement training, empathy and love. Kermit's passion for animals began as a child, when he was kicked out of Sunday school for proudly exclaiming that when you spell "dog" backward, you get "god". Kermit took on Roxy and Roller after they had been bounced around to various humans, and has worked tirelessly to rehabilitate them from traumatized, fearful and subsequently aggressive dogs, to the big cuddle babies they are today. Kermit's dream is to start a dog daycare in the DTES where he can work with humans to rehabilitate their traumatized pets
Board member
Keeleigh Julien
Keeleigh Julien is a dedicated bio-recovery technician with a robust background in Business, Marketing, and social media management. As a passionate advocate for mental health, she believes in the therapeutic power of animals, proudly serving as a cat mom to two senior rescue felines. Keeleigh's commitment to both her professional work and advocacy reflects her multifaceted dedication to making a positive impact.
Board member
Rhiannon Fairweather
Rhiannon has felt a strong connection with animals from a young age, and has seldom lived without them. Currently a kitty co-parent to 3 fantastic felines, she brings her love of animal companions and professional experience working in the DTES to a head. Passionately advocating for all the furry and non-furry homies alike is something Rhiannon has been doing her whole life.
Board member
Dee Tarnutzer
Dee is a first-generation Swiss and Scottish settler, who was raised in Southern Ontario. As a child, they dreamed of growing up to be a dog, but had to settle on being their biggest fan instead. Their ancestors were gypsy-travellers, and Dee has always been a restless creature, feeling most comfortable on the road. They moved out west with their fur-companion Bruce, and have dedicated their life to radical political actions supporting indigenous resistance that protect the land, harm reduction, social justice, and the little crimes that help make this world a better place.
